Teaching Sociology

Research Interests

I have a wide range of interests including Criminology, Gender and Sexuality, Popular Culture, Mental Health, and Social Psychology.  I also enjoy studying media from a sociological lens.

Education/Career Goals

My goal is to teach.  Specifically, I would like to earn my MA in Sociology to become a community college professor in sociology.

Before the Program

I attended Folsom Lake College (FLC) to finish my lower division requirements, attaining an AA in the social sciences along the way.  I then transferred to Sacramento State (CSUS) as a Vocal Performance major.  Despite my passion for music and performance, I changed majors early on to sociology.  I earned my BA in sociology from CSUS and am now just as passionate about sociology as I am about music and performance.

Thesis

While I am still undecided about my thesis topic, I have many ideas ranging from mental health stigma to the use of media in teaching.  Still, my current plan is to analyze children’s media, focusing on gender and sexuality through content analysis or exploring the recent pop culture phenomenon of adults and their interest/consumption in children’s cartoons.

Why Humboldt Public Sociology

Due to my goal of becoming a community college professor, I was pleasantly surprised to see a few colleges in California offering a teaching track within their Sociology MA programs.  Not only did Humboldt have a teaching track, but Humboldt also has a reputation as being established as a teaching school.  Also, although it may sound like an odd reason, while applying for multiple programs, Humboldt was the friendliest and most inviting even over phone or email.  I felt welcome before I even came.

Favorite place to see/visit in Humboldt County

I transferred up here recently for the program so it is hard to say, but I really enjoyed hiking in fern canyon.  The sight is enchanting and the path is fun to trek, fallen logs to climb over, flowing stream to walk around (or in of you are willing to get wet), and breathtaking scenery.  Count me in!
